Dem Dilemma: Will the Majority Back Away from Its Vote to Strip Pork-Barrel Earmarks from Key Intelligence Bill?
The House Majority faces a defining moment today, when 62 of its Members will have the chance to back up a vote they cast just nine days ago to strip pork-barrel earmarks from the Intelligence Authorization Act (H.R. 2082) conference report and direct the funding to human intelligence. On December 4, 2007, 62 Democrats voted for a Republican motion to instruct conferees negotiating the intelligence measure to strike all earmarks in the underlying bill - including a controversial earmark requested by powerful Defense Appropriations Subcommittee chair Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) for the National Drug Intelligence Center (NDIC) in his district. The motion passed 249-160.

In fact, 51 Democrats flip-flopped and rejected the proposal after voting to strike all earmarks just nine days ago.
CIA Interrogation Tapes Issue Plays Out Against Authorization Bill Vote
A Senate panel questioned the chief of the CIA on Tuesday about destroyed interrogation videotapes, an issue that will color House debate Wednesday over a conference report that would ban harsh interrogation tactics. The conference report for the fiscal 2008 intelligence authorization faces a tough fight in the Senate and a veto threat.
