House Rebuffs Reg Presuming Hospitals Will Cheat
Only a dozen House members voted Thursday against an amendment that would block part of a Medicare rule that hospitals say unfairly presumes they would overbill the program by $24 billion next year because of an upcoming switch to a new hospital inpatient payment system. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said in a proposed rule earlier this year that hospitals will exaggerate how sick patients are when the agency begins adjusting payments next year that are more closely tied to severity of illness, and that a “behavioral offset” is needed to reduce inpatient payments across-the-board by 2.4 percent to compensate for the overcharges.
